All Computype, Inc. pressure-sensitive adhesive products should be stored in their original shrink wrapping at approximately 70° F (± 10°) and 20% to 80% relative humidity. These storage conditions will ensure a minimum shelf-life of one year from date of manufacture. Because label products are sometimes shipped long distances prior to usage, they may be exposed to a range of environmental conditions which vary significantly from nominal storage conditions. Short-term variations (~48 hours) in temperature and/or humidity will not affect the long-term performance of the adhesive if the label is returned to normal conditions prior to use.

Computype offers pre-printed labels in rolls, sheets, or pads (fan-folded or gummed). Of course, blank label stock for thermal transfer printing is always supplied in rolls.

The simple but not very helpful answer is, “It depends.” The make vs. buy decision is often not a financial one, but rather an issue of data availability. If the data that needs to be encoded on the label is available within the lead time of a trusted label supplier, pre-printed labels are often the more cost-effective choice. But if the data becomes available at the same time the label is actually needed, then on-demand printing is the only choice.

If you are going to use barcodes to meet an industry standard, then follow the guidelines provided by that standard. If the barcodes will be used only within your organization, select any symbology that encodes the data you need in a symbol that will fit on the space available for a label. Computype can help you quickly determine how much space you’ll need to encode specific messages based on the barcode language and density chosen. All else being equal, Code 128 is an outstanding choice for a linear symbology, and DataMatrix is a very good choice for a 2-D symbology.

A handheld 2-D imager will typically cost around $300 - $400 more than a handheld laser scanner. However, in addition to 2-D symbols, the imager can also read all the linear codes the laser reads. And because they are essentially cameras, 2-D imagers can handle digital imaging and video, signature capture, and document imaging. While there’s currently a premium to be paid, purchasing 2-D imagers for your barcode scanning needs may prove to be a prudent investment, as they will be able to “grow” as your needs evolve.
