The current coronavirus pandemic is impacting the lives of people worldwide, both those directly affected by the virus, and those who are well. As many of us work together to flatten the curve by self-isolating, we can’t forget about those who are unable to, especially those in the healthcare industry.

Healthcare professionals are working on the front lines—treating patients, and behind the scenes—building test kits, looking for treatments and a potential vaccine. As a partner of many of these companies we want to extend our gratitude. It’s extremely humbling to be serving an industry so dedicated to helping in this time of need.Let’s take a look at a few of the amazing things companies we serve are doing to make a positive impact during this difficult time:

Many companies in the diagnostics industry quickly shifted their current priority to preparing COVID-19 test kits—or reagents involved in testing. With coronavirus tests being hard to come by in many parts of the world, this effort will improve the accessibility of testing and allow for more accurate tracking of the spread of the virus. Altogether these companies plan to have tens of thousands of test kits available per month if all goes as planned.

On the research side of things medical companies are working towards two goals: treatments and a vaccine.

A few research facilities are making progress on treatments to alleviate symptoms associated with COVID-19—in some cases clinical trials are already underway! These treatments could make an immense difference for those most at risk of complications if they were to contract the virus—such as the immuno-compromised or those with underlying respiratory issues.

Additionally, research and even the earliest phase of trials for a vaccine have also begun! In an effort to perfect the vaccine and ensure its safety for mass distribution, the testing process isn’t short. One company working on a vaccine estimates it won’t be available for distribution for another 12 to 18 months with the possible exception of emergency use, and that’s if everything goes as planned.

This isn’t to say these expectations aren’t reasonable, or to undermine their work, in fact, we are amazed at how quickly they have been able to take this vaccine from concept to clinical trial! They’ve accomplished a lot in a short period of time.

Once again we want to thank all of our customers in the healthcare, research and diagnostics industries—in addition to medical professionals we don’t directly work with. The work you are doing right now will have a powerful impact on the future. We are so very humbled to serve an industry doing so much in this time of need—and are very happy our barcodes get to come along for the ride.
