What is a 2D Barcode? (in 100 Words or Less)

2D-Barcodes, or two dimensional barcodes are represented by black squares and spaces arranged along a vertical and horizontal axis.

Included in this category are data matrix codes and Quick Response (QR) codes

With information being aligned along two axes instead of one, 2D-barcodes are capable of storing more information in a smaller area than linear barcodes. This makes them a great option for situations where very small barcodes are needed or larger amounts of data are being stored.
