RFID is an acronym for Radio Frequency Identification. The technology involves the transmission of data from an integrated circuit to a reader, the information can then be translated to a human readable form by a computer.

The integrated circuit (or chip) is the part of an RFID tag where the data is stored, an attached antenna delivers the data to the reader’s antenna in a process called coupling.

Though the name RFID suggests identification—and it does provide that—the integrated circuit can be programmed with almost any kind of data—from product names to incrementing variables or website links.
